Cleo John Darby, 86, of Akron died Friday at the Sterling Regional MedCenter. Darby as born July 21, 1915, in Akron to William John and Katherine (Litwiller) Darby.

In his early years, he went to the Civilian Conservation Corps camp in the mountains for two years. Upon returning, he farmed and ranched with his older brother, Frank, for several years.

On Feb. 20, 1942, Darby enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged on June 5, 1945. He was proud of his Navy service record where he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Medal and the Pacific Theater Medal.

On Nov. 3, 1945, he was married to Margaret Gebauer. The family kept, farmed and ranched the same place that his parents homesteaded in 1909.

Darby demonstrated a love for his family and country. He loved to restore antique cars and license plates, and he especially enjoyed working in his numerous flower beds.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his six brothers: Lester, Frank, George, Glen, Calvin and twin brother Claude, and his young son, Leroy.

His is survived by his wife, Margaret, and his son, Delmar Darby, both of Akron; two daughters, Shirley Shaw and Mary Anne Antener, both of Sterling; two sisters, Alice Lindsey of Brisbane, Calif., and Margaret Finney of Walla Walla, Wash., and one brother, Robert Darby of Blandensburg, Md.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions in Darby's memory may be made to the Washington County Rodeo Fund.

Rosary will be conducted today at 7 p.m. from St. Joseph Catholic Church in Akron. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. also from St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Blanco officiating. Interment will follow in the Akron Cemetery with Brenner Funeral Home of Akron in charge of arrangements.
