James Addison Halstead was a physician who also conducted research into nutrition. He married Anna, only daughter of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, in 1952. She died in 1975. He graduated from Harvard University in 1926, and Harvard Medical School in 1930. He served in North Africa and Italy in World War II where he did research on psychosomatic illness among soldiers in combat. He was awarded the Legion of Merit for this work. He worked in Veterans Administration hospitals in the 1950s and worked at the headquarters of Veterans Administration from 1964 until 1971, and thereafter worked in private practice.
