Funeral services for Tilla "Tillie" Bratland of Emmetsburg will be held Wednesday, June 5, at 1:30 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Howard Vrankin
will officiate.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Beiter-Ascherl Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.
Casket bearers are David Bratland, Paul Bratland, Mark Bratland, Eric Bratland, Steven Cook and Lee Axdahl.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, June 4.
Mrs. Bratland died Sunday, June 2, 1991, at Palo Alto County Hospital. She was 80.
Tilla (Gjerde) Bratland was born March 1, 1911, in Cylinder, the daughter of Ole and Ellen (Meling) Gjerde. She attended school in Cylinder and graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1929.
In her younger years, Tilla taught at a country school in the Cylinder area. She also worked at Palo Alto Memorial Hospital and at Seleen Bakery in Emmetsburg.
On June 30, 1931, Tilla and Thomas Bratland were married at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg.
Mrs. Bratland taught at a country school in the Cylinder area for one year. She also worked at Palo Alto Memorial Hospital and at Seleen Bakery in Emmetsburg.
The Bratlands owned and operated Bratland Jewelry in Emmetsburg from 1954 to 1972 when the business was sold to Sherwood Potter. The business is now known as Steven's Jewelry. Mrs. Bratland had worked part time for Sherwood Potter and also for Steven Cook. She retired in 1985.
Mrs. Bratland was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, WELCA and Mary's Circle. She sang in the church choir and taught Sunday School for many years. Tilla was a member of Friday Club and Fortnightly Club in Emmetsburg. She enjoyed playing bridge, quilting, crocheting and other needle work.
Survivors include a son, Orville, of Shoreview, Minn.; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister and two brothers, Mrs. Gunellia Smith of Columbia Heights, Minn., Ernest Gjerde of Emmetsburg and Omer Gjerde of Moorhead, Minn.
Mrs. Bratland was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas, on March 31, 1977; her parents and a brother, Gilbert Gjerde.
The family requests memorials be left to Bethany Lutheran Church.
