Farrier, Company K, 7th US Cavalry. Committed suicide by overdose of opium in his barracks at Fort Lincoln, Dakota Territory (near Mandan, ND).

His first enlistment was on 21 Nov 1867 in the 7th Cavalry. He reenlisted on 30 Nov 1872 in Louisville for the 7th Cavalry. During the Battle of the Little Big Horn, his company was part of Benteen's Battalion, and he survived the battle without injury. Apparently the high loss of men had depressed him, as he had trouble attending to his duties when the 7th Cavalry finally returned to Fort Abraham Lincoln after the battle. He was reduced in rank from farrier to private on 1 Aug 1876. After his death by suicide, he was originally buried in the Fort Lincoln Cemetery, and later reinterred into the Custer National Cemetery. He was 5 feet, 11 1/2 inches tall, with brown eyes, dark hair, and a ruddy complexion. He was not married.
