Herman Smith, who died Aug. 29, 1900 was born in Litchfield, CT on October 18, 1815. In 1818 the family moved to Madison County, NY where he grew to manhood and where he married Miss Julia Ann Keller, his faithful helpmate and lifetime companion. After residing in Fenner, NY until the fall if 1864, the family came to Wisconsin, settling on a farm in section 23, Windsor, where they remained for 20 years. In 1884 Mr. Smith removed to the farm commonly known as the Smith farm about a mile west of the village on the Windsor Road where he resided until the fall of 1892 when feeling himself unfit for the active labors of the farm, he purchased his late residence on Main Street, where he has since lived. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Smith; Horace, who died in infancy, Lewis K. of Paoli who died in 1897, and Orson H. who resides at Rio. WI. His granddaughter, Mrs. Hosea Rood of Bristol lived with them from childhood until her marriage. Mr. Smith is survived and mourned by his wife and son and a numerous family of grand and great grandchildren. He was a true and consistant Christian, a member of the Methodist Church from his early manhood. As a neighbor, he was kind, genial and obliging, as a friend true and loyal and many will miss his kindly smile and cordial greeting. His life passed peacefully by in love and goodwill to all and his memory, like the strains of some soft familiar melody will linger long in the hearts of all who knew him. His end, though unexpected and sudden to his friends, was not to him and after his brief illness he passed to that land where there is no death and where the father and the son shall greet him. The funeral was held from his family home at 2:30 Friday afternoon, August 31 with Rev. J. D. Woods officiating and he was laid to rest in the village cemetery. Sun Prairie Countryman 9/6/1900
