Merle W. Holmes of Otsego, MI passed away Sunday, June 6, 2010 at his home. Mr. Holmes was born August 21, 1919 in Otsego, the son of Frank and Nora (Aurand) Holmes and was a life resident of the area. He worked for 20 years at the Allied Coating Mill in Otsego and 20 years at Perrigo Company in Allegan. Merle served his country in the Army during WWII as a Staff Sergeant in the 126th Infantry and 32nd Red Arrow Division, and was involved in campaigns in Papua, New Guinea, the Southern Philippines and Owen Stanley Mountain Conflict. Merle was wounded at Leyte Island in the Philippines on November 28, 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and many other honors of distinction. He was a member of the D.V.A. and V.F.W. Post #3030. On November 1, 1946 in Allegan, he married Luella Kurtz who survives. Also surviving are 3 children; Kathleen (Charles) Wearne of Allegan, Scott (Valerie) Holmes of Hopkins and Lorna (Mike) VanLent of Otsego; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and another one due in the fall; a brother, Roy (Mabel) Holmes; a sister-in-law, Mable Holmes; 2 brothers-in-law, Charles (Glenna) Kurtz and Calvin Moran; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Garry in 1999, a brother Earl and a sister Doris. Friends may meet with the family Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where services will be held Thursday at 11:00 AM, Pastor Kevin Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego where Military Honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post #3030.
