This is my Uncle Allen Henry Clark Scherrer. He was named for his maternal Grandfather, Allen Henry Clark, the railroader who retired as a Conductor -- having worked the railroads primarily in the mid-west.

At any rate, my Uncle Allen had a mind like a steel trap. I have never known anyone who could remember numbers the way he could. In fact, this talent was put to good use by the Army during World War II. We still don't know exactly what he did for the War effort, but it must have combined the German language, numbers and codes, and Fort George Meade, Maryland.

I must admit, however, that the guy scared me, because as soon as he came into our home, all I could see were his long fingers and wide playful eyes -- and I HATED to be tickled.

We saw less and less of him over the years because of the distances involved and busy careers, but I understand that after he retired, he bacame a Prison Chaplain, which must take a very special personality to remain dedicated to service to this highly specialized 'congregation.'
