Captain F. W. Patterson, who has been a resident of this city for the past 29 years, passed away yesterday at his home on Ridge street.
This second attack of heart failure took him in peace and quiet to his heavenly home in his 75th year.
He was born in Rockingham County, N.C. on September 25th, 1832.
Until the beginning of the Civil War he was a member of the firm of Ellington & Patterson, tobacco manufacturers, at which time he became Captain of Company K, First North Carolina Regulars, under General Swenthrope.
At the close of the War he was elected sheriff of Rockingham County, and afterwards was in the tobacco business.
He was married in 1833 (typographical error) to Ellen Frances Allen, who with the following of his children, survives him: Chalmers, S. A., Richard R. and Miss Emma Scales Patterson, of this city; Page A. Patterson of Lynchburg; T. W. Patterson, Jr. of Atlanta; Mrs. F. H. Smith of New York; Mrs. Rufus Houston, Jacksonville, Fla.; Mrs. R. D. Linthicum of Durham, N.C.; Mrs. J. Kern Ellington of Berry, N.C.
The funeral services will take place at Main Street Methodist Church of which he was a member, this afternoon.
