Daughter of John A. Young & wife of Albert Merchant Kelly who was tragically killed in a wind mill accident @ age 34 in Clinton Co., Iowa.
Mother of 3, a daughter: Lillian (McKesson) and 2 sons: Charles & Clarence.
Celebrating her 113th birthday, Chaplain Fred Crumb announced that she had tied official record for longevity in North America. This article is in the Long Beach Press Telegram dated 31 December 1964. Hospital Frederick C. Crumb also reports that Mrs. Kelly is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records & having lived longer than anyone on the North American continent with proof of her age.
She spent the last 7 years of her life living in the Long Beach General Hospital.
Some of her observations:
At age 101, Don't worry about the younger generation, they have it all under control.
At age 103, I am just a little tired.
At age 104, I threw away my glasses. I see better without them.
At age 106, People think I am an old women. I don't think so, I don't feel old in my way of thinking.
She was an avid reader until she was 108, but then lost interest.
She was honored in the Sunset of Life Program, received cards from President & Mrs. Dwight Eisenhower & other public officials.
She is survived by granddaughter, Mrs. Virginia (Nancy) La Pides, 2 gr-grandson's, Jeff La Pides and Michael Kelly, and 2 nieces (Hattie Young-Kelly's daughter's) Mildred Kolometz & Esther Neusse.
Mary never remarried, remained a widow for 82 years.
