Was Pioneer Resident of Garrett


Joseph J. Loth, of 405 South Cowen street and a resident or Garrett for more than sixty years, died at his home Sunday evening at 7:35 o'clock following a long illness from complications which followed an operation in July of 1934.

Mr. Loth, who had been bedfast and failing rapidly since last August, became suddenly worse Saturday evening after feeling comparatively well all day and during the night he lost consciousness. Death was expected momentarily all day Sunday.

Mr. Loin underwent a major operation at the St, Joseph's hospital in Fort Wayne in July of 1934 and was a patient at the hospital for eleven weeks, then being removed to the Sacred heart hospital in Garrett, where he remained for a like period or time. He was taken to his home and in a couple of weeks was again removed to the local hospital where he spent seven more weeks.

In June of 1935 he returned to nis work as a passenger conductor on the Baltimore & Ohio railroad and worked until Dec. 15, 1935, when he was forced to quit because of his health. He was able to be about and out of doors until last August.

Born at Napoleon, O., March 7, 1870, for fifty-one years Mr. Loth had been in the service of the Baltimore & Ohio railroad. He began as a call-boy at the age cf sixteen in 1886. Three years later he became a yard switchman, then a yard conductor and he began working on the road as a brakeman in 1890. On Jan. 15, 1896, more than forty-one years ago, he was promoted to conductor and he has been a passenger conductor for the last twenty-six years. Before nis illness he operated on trains No. 16 and No. 9.

The Loth family, was among the first settlers in Garrett, coming here from Napoleon, O., in 1876. Mr. Loth was at that time six years of age. He was one of the first students or the public school in the building which was torn down last year and he later attended what is now Central Catholic high school in Fort Wayne.

He and Mrs. Loth, who is a patient at the Sacred Heart hospital, were married at the Catholic church here on June 30, 1894. Besides Mrs. Loth there survive four children; Mrs. A. C. Bapst at Painesville, O., Mrs. Guy Stonestreet of Glens Falls, N. Y.. and Marcella and Robert at home. A son, Germaine, died in 1918 at the age or nineteen, and another son, Quentin, died from burns many years before at the age of two. Other relatives include two sisters, Mrs. John Schiffli of 216 West Houston street and Sister Concoiata of the convent at Marie Stein, O. There are five grandchildren.

Mr. Loth was a member or the Catholic church, the Holy Name society of the church, the O. K. U. and the Knights of Columbus.

Funeral services will be made at St. Joseph's church Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock and burial will be made in Calvary cemetery, with the Rev. J. G. Bennett officiating.

The body will be returned from the Hanklin funeral home to the residence late this afternoon.
