"He was born Nov. 3, 1885, in Ipswich, S.D., to Capt. Daniel M. and Mary Ann Birdseye. He first came to Chico in 1908 and worked as a carpenter at the Northern Electric Railway Co. car barns. He returned to Aberdeen, S.D. and married the former Flora L. Ferguson on Nov. 4, 1908. In 1911, they returned to Chico and built a new home. They returned to South Dakota, but in 1924 they came back to Chico and had resided here since.
"He had been a carpenter and worked on the Presbyterian Church when it was originally built and again when it was reconstructed following a fire. He had worked at the Chico airport during the war years and then retired to a small almond ranch on West Sacramento Avenue where he resided at the time of his death.
"He was a member of the Bidwell Memorial Presbyterian Church, taught Sunday school in the late 1920s and was scout-master of Boy Scout Troop No. 3. He was also a member of the IOOF while living in South Dakota.
"He is survived by two sons, Delbert and Daniel Birdseye, both of Chico; a daughter, Mary Jane Walker of San Francisco; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. His wife Flora died in 1972.
"Rev. Robert Scott, pastor of the Bidwell Memorial Presbyterian Church will officiate at the Tuesday morning service. Wava Backlund will play the chapel organ. Grandsons of Birdseye will serve as casketbearers and they include David F. Birdseye, Robert R. Birdseye, Cris A. Birdseye, Wayne W. Birdseye, Daniel M. Birdseye, and Stephen Walker. Burial will be at the Chico Cemetery.
"The family has requested that those who wish may make contributions to the organ fund at Bidwell Memorial Presbyterian Church, care of the Hall-Van Hook Funeral Chapel. Friends may visit at the chapel from 5-9 this evening."
