Luther Wayne Bailey

On Friday, June 26, 2009, Luther (Bud) Bailey passed away peacefully in the presence of his family at Regina Medical Center in Hastings, Minnesota.

Bud was devoted to his family and friends, and a passionate sportsman. The outdoors was his church and sanctuary, and he spent countless hours on the prairies of Kansas, woods of Missouri, and waters of Bull Shoals Lake.

His wife Betty was adept at cooking the wild game he brought home, and his hunting and fishing prowess was revered by his companions.

Bud was born and raised in Joplin, Missouri, and was a long-time resident of Oronogo, Missouri. Most recently, he resided in Hastings, Minnesota.

During WWII, he served with the Army Air Corps on Iwo Jima.

After the war, he worked for Boeing as an aircraft mechanic in Wichita, Kansas; on Project Redball in St. Louis, Missouri, to dispatch helicopter parts during the Vietnam War; and for the federal government in Parsons, Kansas, as an operations manager at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant. He received many commendations for the outstanding quality of his work.

He is survived by his wife Betty (Culton) Bailey; his four children Michael (Sheila) Bailey, Kathleen (James) Carlson, Karen (Kenneth) Harrington, and Linda Bailey; six grandchildren: Melissa (Bob) Grega, Michelle (Phil) Schulz, Katherine Harrington, Brian Harrington, Adam Johnson, and Jeffrey Carlson; two great-grandchildren: Brett Grega and Grace Schulz; his brothers Bob, Bill, and David; his sisters Norma Goswick and Mary Johnson; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Athra (Provance) and Grant Bailey, and two siblings.

Services will be on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Parker Mortuary in Joplin, Missouri.

Visitation begins at 1:00 p.m., and the memorial service starts at 2:00 p.m.

A short graveside service will follow, with family and friends gathering afterward at David and Janice Bailey's in Carl Junction.

Pallbearers will be Ken Harrington, Jeffrey Carlson, Davy Bailey, Rusty Willis, Brett Pinion, and Derek Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society or Ducks Unlimited.
