Robert A. Campbell was descended from Hugh Campbell, a Scots-Irishman who immigrated through Philadelphia to Augusta County, Virginia, by 1740. Hugh Campbell was a member of the Tinkling Springs Presbyterian Church, near Staunton. Three of his sons moved to Kentucky, probably through the Cumberland Gap, between 1785 and 1790.
Robert A. Campbell was married three times, to Hester Long, to Josephine E. R. Long (sisters?), and to Currilla Housel or Shanks.

Ist wife, Hester Long, was the daughter of Isacc and Martha Mallory Long and married Robert A Campbell 23 January 1836.
