Hardaway's (later Hurt's) Battery was organized by R.A. Hardaway and moved to Virginia in June, 1861. The men were raised in Russell, Macon, and Tallapoosa counties. It was stationed at Manassas until March, 1862, then fought at Seven Pines.
Later the company was placed in R.A. Hardaway's and D.G. McIntosh's Battalion of Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia.
