Born and raised in New York state, Joe enlisted in the US Army and served in Germany for several tours; it was there that he met his beloved wife Ursula. They had two daughters and a son. Joe served in Vietnam in 1967-1968 with the HQ Company, US 1st Logistical Support Command at Qui Nhon, where he was First Sergeant reporting to CO Maj Sam Hudson and XO Lt Karl Voigt.

A favorite saying was that when he got home and reunited with his wife, the second thing he'd do is put down his suitcase.
