Mrs. Harriet E. Holmes, relict of Joseph B. Holmes, died on Friday, Oct. 2nd, at her home on the Holmes farm, following an illness of five days. The cause was heart trouble. She had been in poor health for two years, and when her husband died a year ago it was a sad blow to her health.
Mrs. Holmes was born at Monticello, March 12, 1848, and had therefore passed the 77th milestone along life's highway. Her parents were John C. Durland and Adelaide Dusinberry-Durland.
On February 11, 1861, she married Joseph B. Holmes, the Rev. Robert A. Davidson performing the ceremony.
For 47 years they had lived on the Holmes farm, where Mr. Holmes was considered one of the best farmers of the town, and lived happily in each other's company until death separated them a year ago.
She is the last of a family of nine children. The others, one after another, have dropped by the wayside and now she too has gone to join them.
Surviving her are four children and five grandchildren - Mrs. Gideon L. Hornbeck, Mrs. Charles H. Calkins, Ernest G. Holmes and Mrs. Charles Stackhouse. The grandchildren are: Joseph H., Harriet A and C. Benson Stackhouse and Walter E. and Seth D. Holmes.
She was a member of the Strongtown Methodist Church and Ladies' Aid Society. The funeral was held on Monday at 2 o'clock and interment was in Smith Cemetery.
The pall bearers were her six nephews, L. H. Durland, John Durland, Howard Durland, Walter Durland, Fred Durland and W. G. Durland.
The Rev. Mr. Fraswer preached the sermon.
