NOVI, MICH. – Samuel Jones Clarett, 97, passed away early Friday morning, Nov. 5, 2010, at Providence Park Hospital in Novi.

Sam was born Oct. 3, 1913, in Talladega, Ala., the second child of Henry Leon and Laura Bell Adair Clarett.

In 1926, the Clarett family relocated to Youngstown, which would later become the home of Sam's budding music career.

He was an outstanding trumpet player sharing his talents with the East High School Band & Orchestra, Charles Boiling Post VFW Band & Orchestra, the YWCA Band, the Ben Hilson Orchestra and several groups.

Sam graduated from East High School in 1932.

Sam was widowed by his first wife, Bertha Yates in March of 1938. He married Blanche Hawkins Burton in March of 1941.

Sam worked for Ravenna Arsenal during World War II and retired from Wilkoff and Sons in 1978.

Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Hawkins Clarett, who passed Nov. 16, 2008; his parents; brother Henry; sisters, Roxie Washington and Curvie Arkins; son Hyland Burton.

Sam is survived by son Richard (Della) Burton of Youngstown; daughters, Shirley Davis of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Donna (Jimmie) Comer of Farmington Hills, Mich., and Dorothy (Thomas) Reed of Lathrup Village, Mich.; daughter-in-law, Joyce Burton of Youngstown; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

Arrangements are being managed by L.E. Black, Phillips and Holden Funeral Home.

Services will be held Thursday, Nov. 11, at the Price Memorial AME Church at 11 a.m. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Internment will be at Tod Homestead Cemetery.
