Captain Amos Blanchard Shattack was born in Lowell, Ma June 24, 1863, he was educated in public schools of Lowell, Ma and Frances Town Academy, and Williams College in Massachusetts. He studied law at Manchester, NH with Judge Daniel Clark and was admitted to the NH Bar 11/1857 in Manchester, NH where he continued until he entered the formation of the 11th NH Regiment. He assisted in raising 26 men along with 1st Lt Arthur C Locke of Epsom who recruited 36 men and 2nd Lt. Charles Frost of Hampstead who raised 33. Entering as a private he was soon named Captain of the 11th Infantry, Co. E. The Unit left NH on 14 sept 1862. At some point between his law degree and military service he married Carrie O Stevens daughter of Eben and Mary AO Stevens, her father was an insurance agent in Manchester, Amos and Carrie had a son A. Blanchard Shattuck who ended up with a military career as Captain in the US Army. Captain Shattuck was mortally wounded at the battle of Fredericksburg, VA on 13 Dec 1862 and after having his right leg amputated he died from infection on 17 Dec 1862. His body was conveyed home to Manchester, NH by Chaplin Statton. His wife was 22 and never remarried, lived with her parents at the Myrtle St home raising her son. She died October 13, 1907. There is no mention of his Civil War service on his grave stone in his in laws family plot.
