David Lyman Self was born on August 25, 1959, the eldest son of Sam Self and Barbara Greer Self. David spent his childhood years in Colorado, New Mexico and Texas before moving to Cincinnati in 1974. David enjoyed spending part of every summer at his family’s vacation cottage on Lake Michigan. David attended Mariemont High School and transferred to Perkiomen School in Pennsburg, PA from which he graduated in 1977.

As a young man, David enjoyed many intellectual interests and pleasures. He was an avid reader and loved watching old movies. He aspired to be an artist. He enjoyed exploring antique shops, thrift stores and shopping with friends. He loved many different styles of music, and enjoyed dancing and socializing with others. He was very smart, had a great personality, was a good conversationalist and could be wickedly funny. He was very loyal to his mother and family.

Sadly, David’s life was tragically cut short at the age of 25 in an act of violence on February 18, 1985. His dreams and aspirations were never realized. He was living in the Hyde Park section of Cincinnati at the time of his death.

David was survived by his parents; his brother, Alexander Burroughs Self, and sisters Janet Ashley Self and Elizabeth Millard Smolin. Funeral services were held for David at St. Thomas Church, in Terrace Park, OH, on February 22, 1985. David was laid to rest in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati with other members of his family. He is still remembered and missed every day by those who loved him and survived him.
