OBIT:
In the passing of Jordan Drake, Shawnee loses another of its best-known pioneer citizens. Mr. Drake came to Shawnee in the fall of 1902, and although, as one of Shawnee's leading businessmen remarked yesterday, he did not accumulate great wealth, he has during his residence here been one of the city's most valued and useful citizens, rearing a large family, the members of which have in turn become useful citizens in the communities in which they have elected to live.Jordan Drake was born June 2, 1838 in Orgeonia, Ohio. In February, 1865 he was married at Chillicothe, MO [Bartholomew Co., IN] to Miss Margaret C. Carter. The young couple located at St. Louis Crossing, Indiana, where Mr. Drake had farming interests, where they remained until 1902 when they came to Shawnee. Mr. Drake engaged in the laundry business here in the early days being in partnership with W. B. Rorschach for a time, and also had farming interests in various parts of the county. For the past 10 years, Mr. Drake, because of his advanced age and failing health has done little active work, but his interest in all movements for civic uplift and advancement never waned. For the past six months he has been confined to his bed most of the time, and on Wednesday evening, July 28, at half past ten o'clock in the evening, he passed to his reward. The deceased is survived by his widow and nine children, four daughters and five sons. The eldest daughter, Mrs. L. J. Russell, lives in Shawnee on North University Avenue, Mrs. R. B. Albaugh lives in Oklahoma City, Mrs. E. W Lapsley in Columbus, George, and Miss Imelda Drake lives at home. Of the sons, John H. Drake lives at Hutchinson, Kansas, George F. Drake lives in St. Louis, D. A. Drake at Deer Lodge, Montana, Daniel J. Drake at Harlton, Montana, and Thomas A. Drake at Fort Smith, Arkansas. Mrs. Albaugh and Thomas A. Drake are already here and John H. is expected to arrive from Hutchinson this morning. The others for various reasons will be unable to come. A niece, Mrs. Burkee of Oklahoma City, is expected this morning. There are seventeen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 4 o'clock at the First Methodist Church of which the deceased has been a member for over fifty years. The pastor, the Rev. A. G. Williamson, will conduct the services assisted by the Rev. J. Herron Miller, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church.Shawnee News-Star, July 30, 1920
