Sergeant;Company G 18th Alabama Infantry. E.D. Waldrop lived on the Lawler place, about two miles from Bell Factory. He was a peddler of chickens and country produce to customers in Huntsville. On September 6,1904, he had traveled , by wagon, to Huntsville to sell his wares. At around seven P.M. his team and wagon were found about fifty yards east of the Flint River bridge on New Market Pike(Winchester Road). Waldrop was lying about ten feet from the wagon. He had been beaten to death and robbed. A suspect was located, arrested and placed in the Madison County Jail. Waldrop was well thought of in the community and it didn't take long for a mob to form at he jail. A large mob overran the local National Guard Troops and lawmen and took the suspect, Horace Maples from the jail. They marched him to the Southeast corner of the courthouse square where he was hanged from an Elm tree.
