Kitty Jenkins Carringer, 77, of East Ellijay died Saturday, February 10, 1979 at the Watkins Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. She is my paternal grandmother.

She was born March 16, 1901 in the Stecoah community of Graham County, NC, the youngest daughter of the late John Harvey "Harve" and Aldamanda Josephine Hogue Jenkins. Kitty married Thomas C. Carringer on July 5, 1919. She was a housewife and a member of the Northcut Baptist Church.

Grandma Kitty was an excellent cook who always had a meal ready to feed her large family, especially on Sundays. She was always standing on her front porch, eagerly awaiting the arrival of any or all of her nine children and/or numerous grandchildren. She enjoyed sharing her favorite recipes with her daughters-in-law, and talking to them about the latest stories she had read in the many magazines to which she subscribed. She always wore dresses with spotless white aprons over them. Later in her life, she started to wear pants during the colder months and she would laugh and say she should have done it earlier. She also had a great sense of humor. I have a photograph of her as she laughingly opened one of her requested Christmas presents...a porcelain chamber pot!

Surviving my grandmother were her husband, three daughters, Mrs. Ada Carringer Crisp of Robbinsville, NC; Mrs. Doris Carringer Byers of Brasstown, NC; and Mrs. Jean Carringer Shelton of Sylva, NC; six sons, Robert Bruce Carringer and Thomas Neal Carringer, both of Brasstown, NC; Jack, Edgar, and T.C. Carringer, all of Ellijay, and Ted Carringer of Pioneer, TN; two sisters, Mrs. Dixie Jenkins Crisp of Stecoah, NC, and Mrs. Maggie Jenkins Brock of Robbinsville, NC; one brother, Martin Jenkins of Stecoah, NC; 24 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 12, 1979 at 2 pm from the Northcutt Baptist Church with Rev. Hugh Puckett, Rev. Bill Norton, and Rev. J.R. Cain officiating. The Church of God singers were in charge of the music. Pallbearers were grandsons Alan Byers, Jerry Byers, Gary Carringer, Perry Carringer, Pat Shelton, and Glenn Carringer.

My beloved grandmother was buried in the church cemetery with Bernhardt Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
