Nancy McDerment (Stagg) Fletcher was born in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. Judging by the birth locations of her siblings, the McDerments arrived in Franklin County, Ohio around 1830.

If Nancy's birth date is correct, she married Thomas Stagg (April 3, 1838) when she was only 15. He would have been twice as old as his bride. Thomas's first wife had died and he already had four children.

The family can be seen in Henry Illinois in 1840. Then they moved to Whiteside, Illinois, about 1847. By 1849 Thomas had remarried, and Nancy has disappeared, leaving behind two daughters: Amanda Vicory Stagg who married Edmund Efner and Mary Jane Stagg who married Leonard Alexander Slaymaker. In Leonard's bio about himself and his extended family, Nancy's last name is given as "McDermott." So even in the family, the spelling of this name has caused confusion and not just with the census takers, which has made it even more difficult to track the Ohio family members. Nancy may not have had any communication with her two first born after she left them in Illinois although there was the rumor in the family that she had been divorced. It was only after discovering I was a DNA match with a descendant of James McCool McDerment that I learned about the rest of the family.

One wonders how Nancy returned to Ohio. Did she run off with someone or did a family member come to get her? After returning to Columbus, Nancy found another husband, Harvey Fletcher, who was the same age as her first husband. So far no marriage record has been found. With this union she had six more children. Harvey died in 1871. In 1880 she is living with 4 sons who seem to be working except for Albert who is still in school. In 1900 she is living with daughter Elsie and her family. She indicates her father was born in Scotland although his own records indicate he was born in Ireland. A few years later Nancy passes away at the age of 79.
