John C. Sapp was born January 21, 1918 in Ashland, Missouri. In 1934 he moved with his parents, Ollie and Lucy Sapp and two brothers, Wendell and Oscar, to Hepler, Kansas. In 1941 he enlisted in the army. He was in the "C" Company, 23rd Infantry, 2nd Division. He and many other soldiers were captured shortly after D-Day after landing at Omaha Beach in Normandy, France in June of 1944. The prisoners spent long months of hard work on a German railroad, with practically no food to maintain their body weight. He left the prisoner of war camp on May 7, 1945. He returned home to Kansas and lived the remainder of his life there. John was often called upon to serve as honor guard for the 4th of July parades.

In 1991, 46 years later, he was honored with a special ceremony and received eight medals. Among those medals was the Bronze Star.
