William Byus Smith was the son of Ara and Lydia (Bright) Smith of Elwood, Indiana. His first wife, Anna (Balser) Smith died in 1940. In 1941 he married Mary Melissa (Webb) Eurick. She was a widow. Mary had three daughters from her previous marriage (Elizabeth, Opal and Ethel). Their blended family grew when Bill and Mary had their own children (William and Nettie). William Byus Smith was the pastor of United Christian Church in Elwood, Indiana.
