OBITUARY-
Roland Louis Bernau was born on February 23, 1914, at Commerence, Iowa, to August and Marie (VanBuren) Bernau. RL was schooled in Whittemore and was married to Anna Jensen on June 4, 1939, at her parent's home in Ogden, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed in Kossuth County. Roland and Anna moved into Algona in 2002. Anna died in July, 2004. Roland became a resident of the Algona Manor Care Center in April, 2010, and died at Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona early Wednesday morning, November 3, 2010, at the age of 96.
Roland was a great historian, especially of Kossuth County. He also enjoyed reading, dancing and had a love for horses. He took great pride in owning the largest private native prairie in Iowa. He was a long time member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Whittemore.
Survivors include his son Gary Bernau and wife Pat of Algona; three grandsons; one granddaughter and nine great grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister-in-law, Luana Bernau of Fountain, Minnesota and brother-in-law and wife Paul and Dixie Jensen of Ogden. Roland was preceded in death by his infant son Merlyn, his parents, his wife Anna, three sisters Vera Harms, Emelie Bernau, Ida Faulstick and three brothers, Otto, August and Ernest.
Services were held at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Whittemore, Iowa,, November 6, 2010, 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Michael Botsford officiating. Interment at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Whittemore, Iowa.
