Ernest Nolen Edwards, a graduate of the University of Alabama, was gospel music fan, performer, singing school teacher, songwriter, and music publishing company owner. After his service in the US Army during WW2, Edwards hitch-hiked to singing-conventions from coast to coast, and attended conventions in 48 states, Canada, and Mexico. He also served as the ''Roving Reporter'' for Stamps-Baxter's Gospel Music News magazine, where he wrote of his travels and the events he attended. He sometimes performed as a “one-man-quartet,” jumping between all four parts. During his travels he also compiled a scrapbook of all of the songwriters he met and eventually became a songwriter himself. He formed and operated the Ernest N. Edwards Music Company of Bessemer, Alabama. One of his lasting contributions to the history of gospel music was a book he compiled, The Edwards Album, that included songs he wrote or arranged, songs by others, and numerous photographs of the nation’s finest gospel singing groups, leading gospel songwriters, editors, and publishers of the period. The book also contains excerpts from his ''Roving Reporter'' columns.
