He was the son of Thomas Williams and Mary Temperance White. Robert first married Mary Magdeline Bryant August 1, 1880, in Texas County, Missouri. Six children were brought to this union: William "Willie" Walter, Nora, Della (died when she was two months old), Major Henry, Twins: Martha Ann Lynch and Ritha Octavia (Ritha died when she was about six months old). His second marriage was to Mary A. "Mollie" (Schockley) Pippin after the death of his wife in 1897. Robert's third marriage was to Goldie Whitley September 6, 1934, in Cedar County, Missouri. His occupation was a farmer. According to his daughter, Martha Ann Lynch Williams Haney, he was also a blacksmith and country doctor.

According to his death certificate, he died from influenza at age 79 years 5 months and 22 days. He was a member of the Masons.
