He returned to Frederick County, Virginia, from Highland County, Ohio after the Oldaker settlement there in 1817, to claim his bride. The honeymoon trip was a boat ride down the Ohio River, then back to Highland County.

They had sold their Highland County farm in 1854 for $3200 (nearly $74,500 in 2009 dollars). They were in Iowa by 1856, being listed in the Van Buren County, Iowa State Census of that year with son Isaac W. They are also listed in the 1860 Federal census, with real estate valued at $1,240. Eliza is buried with her parents.
