Governor of New York. He served as governor of the State of New York from 1829 to 1833. Enos Thompson Throop was a protégé of President Martin Van Buren and later served as US Ambassador to the Kingdom of the two Sicilies. An advocate of social reform, he was instrumental in ending imprisonment for debt. He played a pivotal role in developing what is now the town of Owasco. Together with his nephew Enos Thompson Throop Martin, he established and developed a large estate, "Willowbrook" on the eastern shore of Lake Owasco near Auburn. There the Throop-Martin family entertained many national and international figures of the 19th Century, including William Seward, Andrew Johnson, Ulysses Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, Admiral Farragut, George Custer and Jennie Lind. At the time of his death the former governor was 90 years old.
