Edward J. FANSLER, 63, of 1233 Lakeshore Drive, Rochester, died at 9:45 p.m. Thursday at his residence following a sudden illness.
Born on March 14, 1941, in Kewanna, to Earl and Mary Edington Fansler, he lived his entire life in the Fulton County area. On Feb. 20, 1960, he married Beverly A. Keyser in Rochester.
He was a graduate of Rochester High School in the class of 1959. During high school, he was very active in sports and was a member of the Zebra basketball, baseball and track teams.
His love of sports carried over into his life after high school. He was a football official for the Indiana High School Athletic Association for more than 20 years. An avid golfer, he organized and played in many local and area golf tournaments. He organized the Slow-Pitch Softball League for the Rochester Round Barn Tournament for many years.
He was very active in his community. For his dedication and his diligent work to better his community and the State of Indiana, Governor Frank O'Bannon made him a Sagamore of the Wabash in 2003.
Locally, he served as chairman of the Fulton County Democratic Party for eight years. He served on the Rochester City Council, where he was president from 1988-1991; Rochester Park and Recreation Board; and Rochester Board of Works.
In 1992, he was elected Mayor of the City of Rochester. He served through 1995. During his tenure as mayor, he accomplished many projects including the Rochester Pathway and the annual Mayor's Ball, which he hosted to benefit local charities. He was also instrumental in the completion of the sledding hill near Rochester High School and the Fulton County Community Resource Center. He created the Rochester Summer Park Program for children.
He was a regional manager for the Indiana Department of Commerce's Community Development Division. He and his wife owned and operated the Dugout, Rochester, for five years and Eddie's Pizza for four years. Prior to this, he worked for Chamberlin Products Corp., Akron, for 13 years.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Elks Lodge 2120 and Fraternal Order of Eagles 852, all of Rochester.
He was a dedicated family man. He loved his family dearly and his favorite times were the times he spent with his wife, children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly A. Fansler, at home; one daughter, Tami White and husband Ron, Safety Harbor, Fla.; two sons, Todd Fansler and wife Lynne, Hamilton, Ohio, and Troy Fansler, Fort Wayne; five grandchildren, Amanda and Jake White, Safety Harbor, Fla., Jessica, Nicole and Grant Fansler, Hamilton, Ohio; his mother, Mary Fansler, Rochester; one sister, Patsy Sullivan and husband Marion, Rochester; one brother, Bruce Fansler, Rochester; and nieces and nephews.
