Uriah II was the son of Uriah and his second wife, Mary (Buck) Cresse. Uriah and his first wife, Mary Shaw's, son, Uriah H., died in infancy and so when a second son was born to him and Mary Buck they re-used the name, Uriah II. He was born in the Hand-Cresse House on Cresse Lane in Erma, NJ. He married Mary Ann Holmes on August 21, 1858. They had 13 children: Laura W. 1859, Almeda 1862, Lot Buck 1864, Jenny 1862, Harry 1867, Walter 1870, Agness 1872, Daniel 1873, Ada (Cresse) Young 1876, William 1877, Rowland 1879, Frank 1880, and Herbert 1889 which they raised on Cresse Lane. Uriah was a whaler, a farmer and raised cattle on the barrier islands. According to the book "Guarding New Jerseys Shore: Lighthouses and Lifesaving Stations", in 1879 he was a keeper at a life-saving station (CG 135) on Two Mile Beach, which was 4 miles northeast of Cape May City.
