Elmer Richard Fowler, 89, Salida, died Nov. 9, 2003, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Fowler was born on Jan. 29, 1914, in Lamar, to Harvey and Laura Bell (Amrine) Fowler.
He has been a resident of Salida since 1957 and a resident of Chaffee County most of his life.

Mr. Fowler married Florence Marie Webb Jan. 29, 1941, in Kansas.

He served from 1942-45 during World War II and earned the Bronze Star and Good Conduct Medal while serving in North Africa and Europe.

Mr. Fowler was a heavy equipment operator most of his life and retired in 1977. He was instrumental in the development of the county including the airport, fairgrounds and forest service access roads.

He was involved in building Sky Valley Ranch and numerous log homes in the area.

Mr. Fowler was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for more than 40 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry, four-wheeling and traveling.

Mr. Fowler was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Chester Fowler and sisters, Crystal Rabben and Rosemary Fowler.

He is survived by his wife, Florence Fowler, Salida; sons, Richard Fowler, Ouray; Leo-nard (Anna Lee) Fowler, Loveland; Jim Fowler, Salida; Marty Fowler, Denver and Harry (Sue) Fowler, Loveland; daughters, Marie (Larry) LaVassauer, Southgate, Mich.; Maurine Irwin, Salida and Linda (Rick) Martinez, Loveland; brothers, Clarence (Bonnie) Fowler, Salida; George (Mary) Fowler, Craig; Don (Mary) Fowler, Pueblo and Kenneth (Nola) Fowler, Pueblo; sisters, Ellen Hoffman, Denver; Agnes Gingery, Kalispell, Mont.; Ada Bell Manpel, Grand Junction and Margaret Nolan, Littleton; sister-in-law, Donna Fowler, Poncha Springs; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to noon today at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Services are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Friends who desire may make memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association through the funeral home.

Funeral Notice: Funeral services for Elmer Richard Fowler were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Rev. Rick Casteel officiated.
Several selections from a Michael Martin Murphey CD were played.
Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars held their flag presentation ceremonies.
