He was born on Feb. 5, 1954, in Joplin, the son of Bill and Oleta Dawes Ballard.
He served in the United States Army and then enlisted into the United States Air Force where he retired after many years of service. He was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 501 of Joplin, the V.F.W. Post No. 534 of Joplin, and the Ottawa Indian Tribe.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Mary M. Mattes Ballard, of the home. Also surviving are Carlee Elizabeth Ballard, also of the home and Heather Lowe, of Okmulgee, Okla.; and a brother, John Robert Ballard, of Miami, Okla.
Funeral services for James Randolph "Bear" Ballard will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at the Ottawa Indian Long House with Lee Lawhead, officiating and Winston "Cap" Ulrey conducting Indian Rites. The body will lie in state all Thursday at the Ottawa Indian Long House. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Long House. Burial will be the Ottawa Indian Cemetery, Miami. Pallbearers will be Donny Crites, Ken Schairman, Rocky Bullard, John Gibson and Les Lambeth.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carlee Elizabeth
