He was the paternal grandson of Archelaus Barnes Jr. and Penelope Dickenson; and gr-grandson Archelaus Barnes Sr. and his wife, Peggy Thomas, all of Edgecombe County. He is a descendant of Edward Barnes (ca. 1680-1762) & Sarah Pope, considered the patriarch of the Barnes families in Wilson; and a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, Edward Barnes, the London merchant who emigrated to the Isle of Wight, VA ca. 1620.
Frank served in the Civil War as a Sergeant with the NC 4th Calvary, and following the war on October 27, 1869, the 25-year old married 21-year old Matilda "Mattie" Bynum, daughter of Col. Robert Bynum & Elizabeth Ann Harrison of Wilson.
The couple farmed in Wilson and would become parents to 4 known children (2 boys/2 girls): Elizabeth, Alice, Frank and Robert.
Frank Barnes died in 1910 at age 65. His wife of 41 years survived him 15 years, passing in 1925 at age 77.
