Stephen Samuel Bowen was born 30 September 1837 in Talbot County, Georgia, the third child born to Stephen & Permelia Bowen.

He married Sidney C Manderson on 30 September 1857 in Tuscaloosa. Sidney was born June 13, 1833 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She died July 15, 1918 and is buried at Mt Zion Cemetery in Tuscaloosa. A true and faithful friend, marked on her headstone.

Stephen Samuel Bowen was a Sargeant in Company F of 50th Regiment of Alabama Volunteers. It is believed he was killed at Missionary Ridge or Ringgold in battle January, 1863. His service records lists him as 5'9 7/8" with light hair and black eyes, and he was a farmer. He was mustered on 7 October 1861 in Captain NN Clements' Company F, 50th Alabama Infantry. Stephens actual death date is not known. A note in the pension file shows he was paid $2.25 for boards to cover the Bridage Stables and Commissary House on January 7-15th, 1862.

Sidney C Bowen drew a Confederate Pension from about 1889 until her death. She lived with her son on his farm near Mt Zion, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. Her address was Rt 2, Box 55, Cottondale, Alabama.

Stephen and Sidneys children were:

1. Sarah born 1858 married Kenny Johnson, farmer
2. Mary born 1860
3. George Washington Bowen born 23 October 1861,died 17 January 1948.

Stephen had 10 brothers and one sister, Sarah Frances (Sis) Bowen Jennings.
