OBITUARIES OF JOHN DEWITT WHEAT

J. D. Wheat
Our Easter joys commemorated the departure of this faithful servant of Christ, who for many years has acted as Lay Leader of the Church. The parish of Cannon Falls has for a period of several months been vacant. But the congregation was always kept together by this faithful layman. There are few men in the state who have exemplified the Christian life of devotion more than our brother. He was called away suddenly after a few hours illness. A moment before he was taken he said, "I never was as happy in my life as I am today." He was suddenly seized with a severe pain which did not leave him until death released him from his sufferings. His household and friends have the comforting assurance that he departed with the testimony of a good conscience, in communion with the Catholic Church, in the confidence of a certain faith, in the comfort of a reasonable, religious and holy hope and in charity with the world.

DIED
WHEAT--- In Cannon Falls on Sunday, April 7, 1878 at 11 o'clock p.m., J. D. Wheat, aged 61 years.
Obituary
On Monday last our community was startled to learn of the sudden death of J. D. Wheat, one of our oldest settlers, which occurred at his late residence on Sunday night at 11 o'clock, after a brief illness of little more than forty-eight hours. The death of so prominent a citizen, enjoying the universal respect and esteem of a widely extended acquaintance, and who has for so many years been identified with interests of our town, deserves more than a passing notice.
From his first settlement among us he was ever foremost by his counsel and with his means, to forward every enterprise that gave promise of substantial improvement relating to the cause of education and the varied material interests connected with development and progress of a new country.
Mr. Wheat was born in Vermont, May 16th, 1817, consequently at the time of his death was in his sixty-first year. His father's family removed to western New York during his boyhood, on the 13th day of December, 1846 he married Jane, daughter of William Colville, Esq. of Forestville, Chautauqua County, N Y. Hence, with his family he emigrated to Cannon Falls in 1857. The union so auspiciously consumated in '46 was blest with two sons and a daughter.
The family relations of our departed friend were of the most pleasing and most interesting character as all who were privileged with an intimate acquaintance in his household can testify, as in it the evidences of culture and refinement combined with true Christian courtesy were uniformly apparent. Few of the large number that have enjoyed the hospitality of this Christian home will be likely soon to forget the considerate attention of its genial head.
Positive in his friendships and well settled in his convictions he spoke with no uncertain sound, while according to those from whom he differed the same privileges he claimed for himself.

"His life was gentle, and the elements
So mix'd in him that Nature might stand up
And say to all the wold, "This was a man.' "

This is the first break in the family circle. It is the kind husband, the loving father, the obliging neighbor and the faithful friend that is first called by death to enter the rest of paradise.
Struck down in the full strength of mature manhood, direct from the scenes of active duty, when there seemed so much to render long life desirable and probable, we stand aghast and involuntarily exclaim, "In the midst of life we are in death."
In the organization of the Episcopal Parish in this town in 1866, Mr. Wheat took a lively interest, contributing most generously towards the erection of the church building and the support of the ministry. For two years or more at times when the parish had no Rector, he sustained the regular services of the church as Lay-reader, besides superintending the Sunday School. He was elected one of the first officers of the Church, and at the time of his death, was senior warden, which office he had filled most acceptably for many years. In his death, the Church sustains an irreparable loss, he having invariably been foremost in every good word and work. Seldom was his seat vacant at the appointed hour for Divine service and few have we known who engaged with more unaffected fervor in devotions of God's House. He loved the Church.

"Her sweet communion, solemn vows,
Her hymns of love and praise."

The bereaved family have the strongest assurance of the warmest sympathies of the entire community in this sore affliction which they recognize as no common sorrow.
The funeral took place from his late residence on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. F. J. Tassell officiating. A large concourse of friends and neighbors were in attendance and followed the remains to the village cemetery where the last sad rites were performed.
May he rest in peace.
