William was the son of William Patrick Clancy Sr. and Ellen Feeley. He Immigrated to Ontario, Canada with his parents and 4 siblings in the late 1840's. Their farm was located on Lot 4: Concession 7 in Howard Twp, Kent Co. In 1864, while living in Hampton Twp, Bay Co., Michigan, he volunteered for service with Company K of the 9th Regiment of the Michigan Cavalry of the US Army. He mustered in 15 June 1864. He went from private to corporal and when he mustered out on 21 July 1865 at Lexington, N. C., he was a commissary sergeant. His 9th Regiment was then sent by rail to Jackson, Michigan, where they were paid off and disbanded on 30 July 1865. He was honorably discharged. William is listed on the Muster - Out Roll for Co. K, 9th Mi. Cavalry . He was an Irish citizen at the time. He became a US citizen on 5 June 1868. He then returned to Canada where he met Johanna Kinna and they married there in the Fall of 1870. He took her to live on the family farm to help out his widowed father. There they had 6 children: Ellen, Patrick, Mary, Elizabeth, Delia & Anna. They later adopted a son, Edward. They bought a farm in Fraser Twp., Bay Co., Mich. in April 1879. He worked the farm until his death. Note: at some point, he added an "e" to his name.
