This memorial remembers the Kentucky National Guardsmen of Hq Company and D Company, 192nd Tank Battalion who were called to federal service in 1940.
They were sent to the Philippine Islands in October 1941 and lived through the Japanese attack on Clark Airfield ten hours after Pearl Harbor. Robert Brooks of D Company was the first tank crew member killed in WWII on this date.
After fighting for four months to slow the Japanese conquest of the Philippines, on April 9, 1942, they became Prisoners of War. Most took part in what has become known as the Bataan Death March. Many would later die as Japanese POWs in the Philippines or Japan.
