My father was so many things: A leader in the community, with a lifetime history of volunteerism; a political activist, willing to go into World War II as a medic, but unwilling to carry a weapon and take lives; helping those who were sent to concentration camps at Manzanar; always involved in feeding the hungry, in fact the founder of the B'nai B'rith "Bagel Brigade".
In his professional career, he started the Herman Berman Company with just a counter in a store on Vermont Avenue. This single counter went on to be a successful business, now run by his son-in-law, Moshe.
With all of his endless accomplishments, his greatest pride was his family. He adored my mother, me (his daughter Tara), his son-in-law Moshe, his five grandchildren, their spouses, and his four great-grandchildren.
When he looked at us, his face lit up with so much love. We were his greatest pride and joy.
But even the love of his children could not keep him from his greatest love, my mother, Annie, who passed away on October 28, 2010. So he had to leave us to be with her. We understand and we love you Daddy/Grandpa.
