Catherine Jones came into this world on Jan. 14, 1906, in Roswell, New Mexico.
Services will be graveside at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, at Fairview Cemetery with the Reverend Doctor Douglas Richnow presiding.
She was the second born of Jesse and Annie Heard. Her parents called her Mary Catherine. She was born two years before the Model T which could travel at speeds up to 30 miles per hour.. Mary Catherine died Nov. 16, 2010 at her home in the Texas Hill Country. The night before she died, the space station, traveling at 17,000 miles per hour, was visible from her front porch. She has seen it all, from the Model T to the first airplane, to Charles Lindbergh's non-stop flight across the Alantic, two World Wars, the rise and fall of the Soviet Union, Americans into space and on to the moon....and the space station from which mankind will disembark for the planets and beyond.
The Heard family move to Pecos soon after Mary Catherine's birth. She and her sister Jessie grew up in Pecos where their father was a rancher. She and Jessie attended Sul Ross College in Alpine. Mary Catherine married Charlie Cain in the early 30's durning the dust bowl and the Great Depression. A child, John Charles, was born of the marriage. They agreed that "Johnny" was quiet enough and they vowed to have no more. Charlie died in 1946 and, almost 20 years later, she married long time Pecos resident, Elmer L. Jones.
Mary Catherine is survived by her son John Cain, her daughter-in-law Ruth, her grandchildren John and Molly; Mark and Christina; and Matthew; her great grandchildren, Eva Cain, Julia Cain, Zoe Cain and Charlie Cain. Mary Catherine had several other family members and numerous friends.
