OBITUARY

Died at his residence, Kirksville, Mo., June 21st, 1883, Lewis W. Link in his 77th year.

Bro. Link was born in Kentucky, April 10, 1807, but was reared in Illinois. Here the early years of his manhood were spent, and here he married Miss Hannah Crane, with whom he lived in happy, conjugal relation for more than half a century. Of this union were born six sons and four daughters; the wife, three sons, three daughters and numerous grand children survive him.

Bro. Link was possessed of generous sympathies, loving his friends, and affectionate in his family. He was a man of liberal views, always an ardent friend of Temperance, and the supporter of every enterprise that conserved the public good. Much of his life was spent in the public service; and everywhere, in the Legislature and in the various civil offices he was called to fill, he was to the end of life, a respected and trusted servant.

The last seventeen years he resided in Kirksville, honored here, as elsewhere, by his fellow citizens, and surrounded by children and grand children, who delighted to minister to the declining years of their aged parents.

More than 50 years ago Brother Link became a member of the Baptist church. He loved his church and rejoiced in its prosperity. A few years since he received a hurt that hindered the frequent attendance upon the house of God, that had been his wont. He retained, however, his lively interest in the work of his Redeemer, and his love for devotional services. A day or two before he died, referring to his long christian career, he said to his pastor: "Through all these years I have tried to follow my Saviour. I have sometimes wavered, but God has been faithful."

His illness was long and tedious, but he manifested wonderful christain [sic] patience, resting peacefully upon the promises of God to him in Christ Jesus. When the final hour came, blessed with the presence of sons and daughters at his bedside, and sustained by the precious hopes of the gospel, he fell asleep in Jesus.
