Son of Eleck "Alexander" McKay who was born in Scotland and Elizabeth Carpenter McKay of Montgomery County, NC. Brother to Sallie Bethune McKay Cauble the wife of William Charles Cauble of Ansonville, Anson County, NC. Both Sallie and William are buried at Bethlehem Methodist Cemetery, Ansonville, Anson County, NC.
Brother to Pvt. Daniel C. McKay also of Co C "Anson Guard", 14th NC Regiment. Pvt. Daniel McKay was killed at Malvern Hill, VA and is buried at the Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, VA.
Nephew to Pvt. Lauchlin McKay of Co E, 52nd North Carolina who was killed at Gettysburg on 3 July 1863 in the Pettigrew - Trimble Charge (AKA Pickett's Charge) and is also buried at Hollywood Cemetery.
