James C. Connor, 82, of 71 Benedict Terrace, a retired deputy sheriff for Hampden County, died on Friday in the Holyoke Soldiers' Home.

He retired as deputy sheriff 17 years ago. He previously worked for 10 years as a salesman for Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Co.

Born in Westfield, he lived in Longmeadow for 36 years, and was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.

He was a graduate of the former Central High School in Springfield, and St. Michael's College in Winooski, Vt.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and served in the Pacific theater. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 63 of Forest Park, and a charter member of the Liberty Legion Post in Springfield and Longmeadow's Albert T. Wood American Legion Post.

He was also a member of the Longmeadow Council on Aging and the Over-60 Club.

He leaves his wife, the former Mary Curley; three sons, James C. of Fort Collins, Colo., David M. of Springfield and Paul J. of Longmeadow; two daughters, Alice M. O'Neil of Southington, Conn., and Virginia M. Connor of Springfield; two brothers, David M. of Tauro, and Frederick of West Hartford, and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be Monday morning at T.P. Sampson Co.'s Chapel of the Acres, Springfield, and in the church. Burial will be in Longmeadow Cemetery .

Calling hours will be Sunday afternoon and evening.
