John Gardner was the second son of Thomas "Tom" Gardner and Louisa Holt Gardner. He had one brother, Nathan. Sometime after the 1900 census, he left the area. I was told that he had "gotten a girl in the family way but didn't want to marry her". He intended to go up north and promised to write when he got there. He sold pocket watches on long gold chains - a number of which he always kept in his vest pockets. He was never heard from again and his mother, with whom he was very close, always believed he was murdered somewhere along the road, either for his watches or by the girl's brothers. I was never told her name. His birthdate and the picture was given to me from the Gardner Family Bible by Nathan's granddaughter, Edith Ann.
