The son of Abraham & Rachael (Shellenberger) Rodes, in 1860 he was a laborer presumably living in York County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He later worked as a blacksmith and stood 5' 5" tall with dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg February 9, 1865, overstating his age by two years, mustered into federal service there February 10 as a private with the 101st Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. D, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865. His surname is on the roster as "Rhoads," and he applied for his pension using that name.

He married Lucy A. E. Naylor and fathered Lucy May (b. 05/04/76 - married Henry Francis Gundrum). The 1880 census lists him as a widower, but he married Sarah E. Beard sometime thereafter. In 1890, he lived in York Borough where he was one-time commander of Sedgwick Post No. 37, G.A.R.. Cause of death is listed as "cerebral apoplexy."
