Sam Callaway

Sam M. Callaway, 89, Monroe died on November 22, 2010. He was born on August 21, 1921 in Washington, Ga to the late Abner Mell Callaway and the late Kate Echols Callaway.

He was a decorated WWII Veteran that served in the pacific theater for 40 months. He departed San Francisco in 1942 assigned to the Combat Engineer Battalion with the 37th division, part of the crew went to the Fiji Islands on the SS Calvin Coolidge and part went to New Zealand for 90 days until 1943. In August 1943 he made a beach head landing in New Georgia and Bougainville Island and in 1945 went to Luzon, the Philippines and proceed to Manila. He received the good conduct medal, Philippine liberation ribbon with 2 service stars, American defense service medal, and Asiatic-Pacific campaign ribbon with 2 bronze stars.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 24th at Meadows Funeral Home from 3:00 to 5:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2:00 pm, November 26th at Grace Baptist Church in Monroe. Interment will follow at Hill Haven Cemetery. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. Monroe, GA
