Sarah Esther Rothrock was the third of four known children of Adam Bennett Rothrock (1820-1891) and his first wife, Elizabeth Whitlow (1824-1852), who married 11 Jan 1843 at Davidson County, North Carolina and moved to Illinois shortly afterward. After Elizabeth died, Adam remarried to the widow Lucretia Kathryn Cox Ashlock (1835-1912) on 29 Oct 1858 at Putnam County, Missouri and had an additional six known children.
Sarah married John Wesley Thornbury (1826-1900) on 23 Jan 1868 at Gervais, Marion County, Oregon. Sarah and John were the parents of five known children, namely:
1. Calvin Edward Thornbury (1869-1881)
2. Albert Hennegar Thornbury (1870-1940)
3. Virginia Olive Thornbury Booster (1872-1949)
4. John Wesley Thornbury (1874-1875)
5. Lillian Elva Thornbury Keppinger (1876-1956)
