Dr. John Holeman Bailey, 73, of 363 Chestnut St., Meadville, a surgeon and physician in Meadville for the past 36 years, and formerly of Titusville, died about 12:30 a.m. yesterday at his home following a heart attack.

Dr. Bailey was born in Cochranton Feb. 19, 1888, a son of Dr. Sharon K. and Ida Holeman Bailey. His father was a Titusville dentist. He was graduated from Titusville High School, Pennsylvania State Medical School, and Jefferson Medical College, and for 18 months served his internship at San Joaquin County Hospital in California. He spent two years with the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. emergency work and 18 months at Ely, Nev., doing 6 months as first assistant surgeon. Before going to Meadville in 1935, Dr. Bailey had practiced medicine in Westwood, Calif, Elkins and Phillipi, W. Va. He had been on the staff of Meadville City Hospital and was a member and past president of Crawford County Medical Society. He had been member of the Masonic Order since 1919, and was a director of Allegheny Mutual Casualty Co. of Meadville, a director of Park Avenue Plaza, on City Hospital's Surgical Staff and a member of the courtesy staff at Spencer Hospital. He was a member of First Baptist Church. In 1950, he was appointed physician of the County Prison and child welfare office.

He is survived by his wife, the former Martha MacConnell of Philadelphia, whom he married Jan. 9, 1915; five children, Dr. John H., Jr. of Meadville; Robert M. of Meadville; Ralph S. of Harrisburg; Mrs. Sherman (Evelyn) Watson of Sacramento, Calif.; and Mrs. Edwin (Martha) McCoy of Meadville; his mother, Mrs. Ida Bailey of Pleasantville; two brothers, Dr. Roger S. and Dr. Oakland K. Bailey, both of Meadville; a sister, Mrs. Shirley Erwin of Meadville; a niece, Mrs. Grover Stainbrook of Stainbrook, and fifteen grandchildren. A brother, Dr. DeForest Bailey, and a sister, Mrs. Arthur Stevenson, preceded him in death.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Roofner Collins Funeral Home in Meadville. Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery.
