J.T. Canfield Former Mail Official Dies
James T. Canfield. 68. native son of this village, and, at one time President of the National Railway Mail Clerks' Association, died Thursday evening at 8 o'clock at the family home, 69 Elizabeth street, in this village, following a brief illness.
Mr. Canfield was born in Ellicottville, November 10th. 1865, and was a graduate of Chamberlain Institute in Randolph. After teaching school in Great Valley and West Valley, he entered the U. S. Mail Service in 1867 and was stationed in Boston, Mass., and Chicago, Ill., as chief clerk for
several years. While in Chicago, he was elected president of the national organization of Railway Mail Clerks. Later he was transferred to Syracuse and retired two and one-half years ago to make his home in this village.
Mr. Canfield was widely and well known in this section, his family being one of the early pioneers in this region. He was a gentleman in every respect and his kindly disposition,
fine character and true friendliness won for a him a legion of friends who
mourn his demise.
Besides his widow, Mrs. Luella Sprague Canfield, the deceased leaves three sisters. Mrs. H. M. Van Bergen and Mrs. H. D. Gros of Syracuse, and Mrs. A, A Van Auken of Sea Breeze, N. Y., and one brother, Carl A. Canfield of Boston, Mass.
Funeral services were hold Monday morning at 8:30 o'clock from the family home in Elizabeth street and at 9 o'clock from Holy Name of Mary church. The funeral Mass was offered by Rev. Paul Termer of this parish. Interment took place in the family plot in Holy Cross cemetery.
The active bearers, all members of the postal service were W. E. Fisher, C. J. Davis, William Coston, Joseph Fitzpatrick, and G. C. Siverling, all of Salamanca, and E. R. Bacon of Great Valley. The honorary pall bearers were G. O. Brown and Peter Dunn of Syracuse, Peter Schardt of Washington, D. C., J. F. Barnett of Allegany and August Bindeman of Buffalo.
Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. H. M Van Bergen, and Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Gros of Syracuse; Mr. and Mrs. Carl A. Canfield, Boston; Mrs. A. A. O. Brown, Frederick Flagg, Syracuse; Mr. and Mrs. Frederick J. Moffitt of Hamburg and J. C. Groat of Salamanca.
